MEETING RECAP - JUNE 19th, 2017

JUNE 19th, 2017 - CLUB ASSEMBLY - MEMBERSHIP FORUM

President Jack brought the meeting to order in what would be his final regular meeting as our illustrious Leader! Claire delivered a well prepared and thoughtful grace, giving thanks for Rotary's strong leadership.

Several Announcements followed:

  • The RYLA program is being rejuvenated and we are seeking young candidates to participate. Walter Murray School has offered to help with this initiative
  • We are also looking to contact Past members, to invite them to the President's Dinner June 26, and hopefully interest them in rejoining. Don S. is leading this charge
  • The Polio Plus program has announced impressive new fundraising accomplishments with new three year commitments of $50 million from Rotary International, linked with a commitments of $100 million each from both the Gates Foundation and the Federal Government respectively
  • Gary R. is doing a great job of catching grocery card sales at the door to the meeting, having sold $2,000 since last meeting. $25,000 still to go to whittle down our card inventory. This is a painless fundraiser, as we're all going to buy groceries anyway
  • President Jack reminded all of the June 26th President’s Dinner and encouraged all to get their tickets from Mark G.
  • The Fishing T trip kicks off this coming Thursday and is bound to put serious pressure on the Four Way Test
  • Dave S. spoke to the Inter-Club Golf Tournament on August 16 and can fill in the details for those that want to attend. It always proves to be a lot of fun and fellowship.
Sergeant Dave came on deck, deliberately docking donation dollars directly:

  • Missing badges (Jack absconded with them)
  • All those that thought President Jack did a great job this year as President – It was positively unanimous!!
  • Those with Dues arrears – for shame!
  • President Dinner missers
  • Dave S. for a Father’s Day fishing trip with his son
  • Mark for a Father’s day golf junket with his sons where they even  paid
  • Claire for his FD gift of two pairs of gym shorts that didn’t fit
  • Wayne for a FD outing at the lake and with grandkids
  • President Jack for his son John’s new grandkid announcement, for his daughter riding competitively in Spruce Meadows and for lunch with his other son.
  • Mike for a FD lunch with his dad where little political discussion occurred (for a change), and for his late greeter’s duties
  • Bev for spending time with her 90 year old father in Ontario, along with another 103 year old family member
  • Paul for moving into their new place and now marketing their beautiful house
  • Joanne for an upcoming family trip for three and a half weeks to Finland (while also visiting a former exchange student) and then on to Ireland
  • Peter V. for his daughter’s Crusader Shield award
  • All for not looking at Al’s archive box closely enough
  • Graham for a FD dinner at James' and Rebecca’s new house and a sturgeon fishing Groupon from Mallory who is travelling in Taiwan

Today's Program

Joanne Fisher, our incoming Director of Membership was our guest speaker, leading the group through an interactive discussion on how to improve our membership numbers, an important topic evidenced by the strong turnout and participation today. She in essence condensed a three hour topical webinar from the Rotary Conference.

Following active table debate, numerous ideas and observations were shared:

  • We need a strong membership committee as this can’t be left to one person. All members need to take a role
  • Introducing prospective candidates is critical, with an emphasis on a younger crowd
  • Better PR is needed about Rotary, addressing the time commitment misconception. Our best kept secret is Rotary
  • Social media could be better used, especially Facebook
  • Young families are consumed these days by jobs and family and may be reluctant to commit volunteer time, although many do and balance this fine
  • The idea of one board for all three Clubs is still being looked at
  • Can meetings be streamed on-line for those that can’t physically attend?
  • Facebook is a great tool for communication. District training is available for this. Websites are becoming obsolete and Facebook is now the new norm. Our Website is current and up to date thanks to Gord
  • Classifications such as hotel employees and office tower workers can be targeted and could be blitzed in October
  • Joanne became a member as her bank identified young women for leadership training and saw Rotary as a networking opportunity
  • In 1994 we had 120 members but today although we are much smaller we get a lot more done
  • Joanne shared research showing 4 in 10 never heard of Rotary, or know the name only. Friendship is the number one reason members join and stay with Rotary. 35 percent join because of the local impact, but global impact keeps members engaged. Misconceptions about Rotary are common
  • Working with Rotary leaders is beneficial to members and offers a strong value proposition
  • We need to look for what interests new members. Don’t pressure new candidates to join and recognize that the induction process is important
  • Rotary is now flexible with using Corporate memberships. Developing leadership skills is a very real benefit of joining Rotary for young executives
  • Three truths and a lie could be used at meetings to get to know all members better. Filling in a questionnaire can capture key member interests
  • We currently stand at 48 members plus 8 Honorary members. 6 new members should be our goal for the coming year.

Great job Joanne!  Our Club membership is in good hands.
