Submitted by Will Arscott

Facebook with Bev Johnson

The meeting was presided by Past President Jack Brodsky who filled in admirably for President Mark who was away moving his son to Oregon and for Incoming President Paul who was unable to make the meeting.
Greeter -
Cashier - Wayne Palmer
Visitors and Guests - Past President Jack
Set-up - Al Morton
Grace - Steve Wilson

Our only guests were prospective member Phil Doerkson and incoming transfer member Huey-Ming Tseng.

O Canada was led by Wayne McGillivray.

Grace - Steve Wilson asked for help in our Rotary service. He even asked for help with our attendance. Maybe there are limits even on the power of the divine.

Announcements

Jack reminded the club of the five-club meeting on November 7th (Tuesday). Jack had tickets. They sell for $40 each and he can take credit cards. It will be a three course served luncheon at the Bessborough. The subject is the Red Cross and Syria. Kareem Nasser will also speak.

Rotary Leadership Seminar will take place over three Saturdays. You do not need to be able to attend all three to receive credit. Please take in one or more as you are able. Dates:
October 28th in Prince Albert
Nov 4th in Saskatoon at the Parktown
November 25th in Saskatoon at the Parktown
More information is available on the District 5550 website. Jack spoke to this event and said he attended in the past and found it most useful.

Friendship Inn: We are to serve breakfast and lunch on October 30th. The roster is filling but we still need more people: The biggest need is for the 1pm clean-up where we need four more people. Another couple of people could be used on each of the earlier shifts. Peter is away so please see Dave s if you can help. Family members or non-Rotarians are most welcome.

Bev Johnson announced a meeting of the Public Image Committee (previously public relations). The meeting is to take place 9:30 am Tuesday at the boardroom of the Saskatoon Media Group (Vic Dubois’).
Club Elections will take Place December 4th. Please see Paul Gauthier if you would be willing to serve our club on its board.

October 24th is World Polio Day. Please look for further information from Brenda Banbury.

Sergeant at Arms - Gary Rusu

- Gary began by telling an story about a Scotsman named Donald McPherson. The upshot was that his wife like all Scots people was very cheap with money. It was surprising that Gary Kerr did not demand an apology for this blatant ethnic stereotyping.

- In honour for World Polio Day on October 24th Gary took a couple of minutes to review the information on Canada’s response to polio in the Canadian supplement to the latest Rotary magazine. With its most recent pledge of an additional hundred million our nation has provided $650 million towards the eradication of polio. It is believed an additional 1.5 billion will be required to finish the project. We have provided more than just money. Gary pointed out that it was a Canadian that first learned how to duplicate the polio vaccine. Wild polio is still a problem with three cases appearing in Pakistan so far this year.

Happy and Sad

- Gary began by putting in a happy dollar himself for having new prospective members present at the meeting.

- Dave S put in a happy dollar for his son having sold lots of honey.

- Mike Giesbrecht put in a happy dollar for the apple project with the Kiwanis. All from our club dressed as clowns even Heather. Only one person expressed to Mike that they did not like clowns.

- Wayne McGillivray sad for fly-past at Husky game which was on time but very loud. Happy for invitation to sing for both men and women Huskies.

- Will Arscott put in a sad dollar lamenting how casually our members come dressed to meetings. He pointed out that in the 50s and 60s our predecessors in the club always wore ties at meetings. Even all of the women members at that time wore ties. However Will is prepared to have members at meetings without ties so long as they pay a fine.

- Finally a happy dollar from Bev Johnson who had two of our members ‘like’ the Facebook post she posted to our Facebook page Monday morning. Thanks to Wayne Palmer and Al Morton.

FACEBOOK - An Introduction with Bev Johnson

The first thing Bev wanted to assure us is that using Facebook is not difficult and that no expertise is required. She presented our clubs Facebook page and challenged us to make it more active. We can post to the page. So long as members do not post anything that is disrespectful, there is no problem with individual members posting to our site. Bev, as administrator, has the power to remove a post in the unlikely case that it is necessary.

When you ‘like’ something on Facebook all your friends on Facebook are told that you like it and in that way word can get out about the things our club is doing. Most often the people who ‘like’ things on our page are not members of our club.

Bev went over the basic icons on the Facebook page. There are three main icons: ‘Like’ ‘Follow’ and ‘Share’. When you ‘follow’ an items further posts related to that item will come to your Facebook page. When you ‘share’ an item, that item goes to your Facebook page and goes out to all your friends.

We then went over the ‘comment’ command. Bev showed us the post to our Facebook page she made about our project at the Friendship Inn on October 30th. She showed us how she made a comment on her own post to give the reader even more information about the event.

Please help Bev make our Facebook page more active and dynamic. Members can post directly to the page or send the material to Bev to post. Jim Weber might have a picture or two of the Becas students that he could post to the Facebook page and than add a comment suggesting readers go to our regular site for further information.

Jack Brodsky raised the concerns about Facebook that are shared by many of our members. Jack says he created a Facebook page for himself but has really not made much use of it. How do you deal with a flood of messages from a well-meaning but politically deviant relative? You can unfriend him but that can create issues. Bev says she believes there is a way to ‘unfriend’ people without them knowing it has happened but is not sure how to do it. There are also issues with the sheer volume of posts you can receive. Maybe you do not like dozens of cute puppy videos. In practice you can usually scroll through the morass quite quickly. Just because somebody posts a video does not mean you have to take the time to watch it.

Past-President Jack thanked Bev for her talk.
