MEETING RECAP - 24th April 2017

Submitted by Will Arscott 26th of April 2017
MEETING RECAP - Meeting at Bessborough: Visit from Adventures in Technology students.

The meeting was presided by President Jack Brodsky
Greeter - Heather Clysdale
Cashier - Avis Hardy and Wayne Storozuk
Set-up - Al Morton and Wayne McGillivray
Visitors and Guests - Peter Whitenect

O Canada - was sung rather well by the club

Grace - An appropriate grace was led by Al Morton who pointed out that youth is a future and Rotary needs to help youth find the reward of service

Visitors and Guests - Peter Whitenect

Visiting Rotarian - Nicki Rooks president-elect of Riverside Rotary
Smitty McKurlie - guest of Gary Rusu
Brad Weigel - representing the Saskatoon Co-op
Winston Blake - the RAP Executive Director
June Gawidie - the Saskatoon Council on Aging
We also had 21 young and very bright looking students. These students were not introduced by name but, to make things manageable, the Rotarians at each table were asked to make full introductions of everyone at their table.

The club then rose and sang the Hello Song. It has been awhile since the guests have outnumbered the members. The members sang with gusto as the meetings are always better with more people.

Announcements

Peter Zakreski Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. President Jack announced Peter’s regrets at being unable to attend as he was in Regina receiving this award. All the members o the club congratulate Peter and know the hard work he does.

District Assembly: There will be a District Assembly meeting held the morning of May 6th. The subject will be building and maintaining Rotary membership. This meeting is to be held online. Joanne Fisher is planning to take part. It would be great if others also wanted to participate. Let President Jack know and a location can be booked in order to do this as a group.

Grocery Cards are available from Gary Rusu.

Badge Shield and Star Dinner - This is the first meeting since the event. By all accounts it was an excellent event with a great speaker. It also boasted the highest attendance at a BS&S. No financial results are available but things look good and there will be announcements coming.

The Meewasin Rotary Lobsterfest is to be held on June 3rd. Last year our club sent a good contingent and an enjoyable time was had by all. See Jack to book your ticket. The tickets are $75 but our club will receive $40 of this if we sell the ticket ourselves. This could be a good fundraiser for us.

Polio Plus: A summary of the current year results was sent to all members by email. To date there had been only five cases in the world in 2017 down from 35 or so last year. We still are not quite there. There is a petition attached to the email asking the Federal Government to maintain the matching grant of up to $150 million in support of the eradication of polio. All members please consider signing this petition.

Five Club Meeting: We will not have our regular meeting next week as there will be a five club meeting hosted by the Nutana Rotary Club. The meeting will be Tuesday May 2nd at the Parktown. The subject will be Truth and Reconciliation with our Aboriginal Citizens. All members are asked to make an effort to attend.

Golf Pool: We had 448 entries this year and made $2,000 for the club. The only winner with the club was Mark Gryba who won $100. The winner was a very pleased resident of Cutknife. The sergeant was to be made aware of Mark’s good fortune.

Meal Cost - As you may have noticed on arrival the cost of the meal has been increased to $25. This was made necessary by the extension of the 6% PST. Without the increase our club would be losing each week on meals. [Editor’s note: While I do not mind the increase necessarily it seemed that all the caviar and lobster were gone by the time I went through the food line.]

Sergeant at Arms: Gary Rusu

Gary decided to have us play a game: He asked a trivia question and the member who was able to answer it correctly received a free sergeant’s ticket but the other members at the member’s table had to pay a fine:

- Two places our Adventure in Technology students will visit in Saskatoon are the Syncrotron, Canadian Light Source and Loraas Disposal.

- The Rotary Peace Plaza in Rotary Park was unveiled in 1998 (thanks Mark Gryba).

- Bill Gates matches Rotary member’s Polio Plus donations two times to one. The current Gates Foundation commitment is coming to an end but the hope is to extend it to 2022.
- It is the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation this year. 91% of all donations to the Foundation go to programs. Thanks Gord Menuz for knowing this!

There was a trivia question concerning a video which was only for guests to answer. It must have been too difficult as Gary seemed to have to answer the question himself.

Happy and Sad:

10H Mark G for his success in the golf pool.

H Bev Johnson for grandchild winning the Star Wars costume contest at this week’s Saskatoon Symphony Concert.

2H Wayne McG for Ottawa staying alive in the play-offs and representing Canada in the second round. (And how about those Oilers!)

4H President Jack for the youth in the room.

Presentation of Cheque for RAP from Saskatoon Co-op

In past years the Saskatoon Co-op has been a supporter of RAP by being a corporate sponsor at the Badge Shield and Star Dinner. This year they decided to move from being a dinner sponsor to being a direct sponsor.

Brad Weigel was on hand to present a cheque for $2,500 from the Co-op to RAP to President Jack. Brad made a few remarks about the Saskatoon Co-op and its support for worthwhile community projects over many years.

PROGRAM: Introduction to RAP Winston Blake
The RAP Tech Buddies Program with June Gawidie

The program was to show the work of our club to the visiting technology students. These programs have been covered extensively in past Rotatellers and I will not attempt to introduce theses programs here.

Winston explained the RAP program which is now in nine Saskatoon high schools. The purpose is to create a safe and respectful community. Though RAP certainly works with students who face immediate issues, it is for all students. Many aspects involve development of community and leadership.

June Gawidie summarized the purpose of the Saskatoon Council on Aging as promoting the dignity, health and engagement of older adults. This is done through a variety of programs. There is considerable evidence the society as a whole does better when youth and older adults are engaged together.

Tech Buddies is a program between RAP and the Council on Aging having students teach technology to older adults. To date it is in two high schools and will expand to at least three next year. The rewards are already obvious: The students learn empathy and engagement more than anything else. These lessons are more at the heart of the prgram than technology.

Winston told a wonderful story about a reluctant student participant in the tech buddies program who came to show true empathy and care and is now more than anxious to participate again.
