MEETING RECAP - November 4, 2019

Submitted by Steve Wilson

Wendy Cooper was our MC. Wayne Palmer was on cash with Paul Gauthier introduced Visitors and Guests, Vic Dubois was the Greeter as much as his voice allowed him (bronchitis) and Al Morton and Wayne McGillivray did set-up.

O Canada and Rotary Grace were sung, with the assistance of Wayne McGillivray.

Visitors and Guests

Delapo, who will be an exchange student this coming year was one of our guest speakers. Ruth Marritt and Earl Newton from the North Club were present.

Delapo spoke of her time in China. Our club had given her some financial support to go to China
and now she has returned to and wished  toreport to us. She spent some time in San Francisco at a boot camp where they practiced making presentations and worked on problem- solving. She made some strong friendships which continue to this day. Her internship in China was for three months. She was on her own, which was both scary and exciting. There was culture shock, especially in the first two weeks, and not much direction given.by her supervisor. Delapo had to find her own way and had considerable time by herself. This brought more self-awareness and she showed some of her video journal.

Recently Delapo also spent time in Nigeria and Uganda.

Happy and Sad Dollars

Wayne McGilllivray obtained some poppies for us and gave some happy bucks for our various football teams.

Will Arscott gave some happy dollars by way of announcing a musical production he is part of being held at the Broadway Theatre.

Dave Sundby attended the funeral for Bernie Sonntag. He was happy to have been in B.C. with his father, who turned 89 and is still a good driver.

Avis and Peter Zakreski both mentioned being at Bernie's funeral and Peter said it was Bernie who invited him to become a member.

Maureen is happy to back after almost 10 months in Uganda. She is also happy that her daughter, who attends St. Joe's, is on the honour roll.

Peter Voldeng is happy to join us after being away a while and is happy / sad that his daughter may be attending college in Minneapolis.

Gary Kerr, back from spending 10 days in southern Ontario with his wife and is planning to spend 10 days or so in B.C.

Joanne said her son's school, St. Joe's made it to the City High School Football final but lost to Cross.

Vic Dubois was happy he wasn't asked to M.C. because he had bronchitis. He said since becoming President he hasn’t been asked to MC. He was reassured that he will soon MC a meeting.

Announcements

Wayne Storozuk explained two new membership categories. The first is an under 35 category where the cost would be $ 205.00 annually. This matches our actual financial obligation for each member and is less than our full membership fee. The second is a family membership where a spouse can join for $ 25.00 and become involved in the workings of the club.

Ruth Marritt from the North Club announced their steak night, which includes entertainment. The cost is $ 25.00 and $ 20.00 for a child. The event will be held at the Lawson Heights Soccer Centre on November 28th, upstairs in the bar. Happy hour is at 5:30 pm. Your meal choice is Steak Sandwich, Veggie Burger, or Chicken Burger. Proceeds go to Vulnerable Children and Youth. For tickets contact Ruth at the North Club or Steve Wilson will help you get in touch.
Paul Gauthier was given some tickets to sell

Joanne Fisher led a discussion about King George and wanted to see if we had enough volunteer support in our club to put on a Christmas Market again this year. By a show of hands we agreed there was enough of us willing to help. Wayne Storozuk pointed out that it is especially important to collect gifts suitable for the students' fathers. It will take place on December 17th - a Tuesday, the day after our Christmas lunch. Joanne also mentioned that the school wanted to get the reading program going, which is something we tried to help start previously.

Paul Gauthier told us that there are no membership donations to the Rotary Foundation yet this year and we need to reach a threshold to be able to apply for District Grants. He will send an e-mail with more information.

Dave Sundby announced that we have some members who have signed up to assist Dave and Steve Wilson at the Enchanted Forest. More are welcome. There is a World Community Service meeting set for Tuesday, November 12th at Pete Zakreski's residence.
It starts at 6:15 pm.

Maureen presented a Rotary Banner from the Mbarara Club in Uganda.

Vic announced the next board meeting is Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at 7:00 am.

RAP REPORT

Jack Brodsky showed two videos which promoted the concept of "Choose Kindness."

One video showed Ellen doing a monologue. The second showed students who appeared to be either bullied or ignored. At the end it showed some positive messages. These videos were produced by high school students in our City.
