MEETING RECAP - 18 September 2017

CLUB ASSEMBLY AT THE BESSBOROUGH

The meeting was presided by President Mark Gryba
Greeter - Gary Kerr
Cashier - Wayne Palmer assisted by Gary Rusu
Visitors and Guests - Huey-Ming (HM) Tzeng introduced herself.

President Mark rang the bell on time and eleven of us sang O Canada led by Wayne McGillivray We had a sparse meeting but more members did filter in over the lunch period.

Grace - In the absence of Gary Emde, the traditional Rotary grace was sung.

We had a visitor at club who is a long term Rotary member whom we have not met before. Prior to the meeting Huey-Ming (HM) Tzeng introduced herself to our members. [Editor’s note: ‘Huey’ is pronounced ‘weigh’ so her first name comes out sort of like ‘weigh-meen.’] We were delighted to meet her. Huey-Ming has come to Saskatoon to take up a new job as Dean of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan. Her previous Rotary club was #9255174 in Coolceville, Tennessee. We hope to see Huey-Ming back and think she could aid our club’s very active international work. And, frankly, we could also use more gender and racial diversity. Great to meet you!!

Announcements

District Governor’s Visit: Peter Neufeldt will be visiting our club next week on the 25th of September. Please let’s have everyone out and on time. Please note change of venue. The meeting will be held at THE SASKATOON CLUB.

President Mark is away for the next meeting on the 2nd of October so incoming president Paul will take his place. There will be no meeting on October 9th due to Thanksgiving.

On the 30th of October we are serving breakfast and lunch at the Friendship Inn. The sign-up sheet is going around so please sign up for a shift and let Peter Z. know that we have the workers as soon as possible. Every survey of our club says we want more hands on. This is a real good opportunity to see and support the larger community in which we live.

Gary Rusu has grocery cards. Currently some $12,000 of club money is tied up in these cards. Help us get this number down and provide some further funds for club projects.

Joanne Fisher along with Jack and Tammy met with the new Principal at King Edward school. Our projects are to continue and some ideas have been put forward. Our annual Xmas Market is scheduled for Thursday December 21st. More to follow.

There will be a meeting of the Becas committee at 7:30 on Wednesday. All are welcome whether members of the committee or even club members.

The Kiwanis Apple Project is a go for Saturday September 30th. This involves giving out apples and receiving donations. Wearing the clown suit is optional. Our club will be paid 60% of the money collected by its members. This is an easy hands-on project. Friends and family are welcome to help out. Contact Wayne Storozuk, Mike Giesbrecht or Jim Weber is you would be able to help out.

Dave Sundby talked briefly about the Enchanted Forest. Dave would like to see us cover 30 nightly shifts and earn half the proceeds for our club. He is willing to take about 20 of those shifts but we need another volunteer who is willing to be a shift principal and work about ten shifts. Talk to Dave if you can consider this. We will also need a second person for each shift but no formal training is required. The sign-up for the second persons will follow. This is a very profitable project.

World Service Committee meeting tomorrow at 7:30 am at the Saskatoon Club

Sergeant at Arms - Gary Rusu

- the sergeant started by giving his own happy dollar for the new person in the room. Gary was further fined for miss-pronouncing the name of our guest and then arguing about it.
- Gary asked about birthdays and anniversaries and Jack gave a dollar for an anniversary last week.
- Gary asked a series of questions related to Brenda Banbury’s latest update on Polio Plus. The few cases this year have been only in Afghanistan and Pakistan and appear to be the naturally occurring virus.
- Gary went on to ask questions about who were the richest men in the world. Fortunately nobody in our club had to pay a fine for being one of them.
- On a really happy note, Gary asked questions on the OAS claw-back.

Happy and Sad

- 2X Happy Wayne McG for ‘Rider’s win and parents 73rd?? Anniversary.
- Happy Wayne Storozuk for finally getting his basement cleared out and his home gym up. We expect to see the new ripped Wayne appear over the next few months.
- Happy Gary Rusu for daughter’s crash in bike event at Waskesiu and her not being seriously injured.

Club Assembly:
President Mark began by summarizing several reports from members who could not be present:

Public Relations Committee from Bev Johnson. Bev is trying to get a group together to do public relations on behalf of the club. Nothing so far. If you would be interested please contact Bev. Related to this Vic Dubois has applied on behalf of our club for a Zone Rotary Image Award in connection with our anniversary celebration and the materials created in connection with this project.

Club Administration from Wayne Palmer. Has had contact with Rotateller people and we are in good hands with Will, Graham and Steve. Gord Menuz will continue to do the website but the time is fast approaching when we need a successor to Gord. For anyone with experience managing websites this would be an easy way to make a major contribution to the club.

Club Service (local) from Steve Wilson. RAP continues to be our club’s big local project. The program is now in nine high schools. The King Edward project is also growing with the Market reading program and other initiatives. The community room has been well accepted and impressed the RI President on his visit. Joanne really does need more help. [This seems the refrain in many of the reports; the answer is to grow the club.]

World Service is an area where our club is particularly active with several important projects including Malawi, Joy’s Foundation, and the Becas project. This is our second year as host of Adventures in Technology headed by Steve Wilson. More help will be needed here.

Membership is being headed by Jim Weber on an interim basis. This committee more than any other needs the help of every member of our club. Jim would like to start the afternoon wine and cheese meets as it has worked in the past. As soon as he has the names of 7 to 9 prospective members he will set up the first. The goal is to find out what prospective members want and provide that opportunity to them. If members can come up with possible names the committee will do the rest. Please give any names you may have to Jim or a member of his committee. In the future Jim would like to do something on YouTube where we can direct prospective members. Jim asked and got some volunteers for his committee. The club also needs more women (and visible minorities).

Program by Dave Sundby would like to have more vocational talks. He would also like to have more project updates so the club is more aware and excited about what it is doing. We also needs regular fellowship events. Out next fellowship event will be the Foundation Dinner. Overall speaker meetings will be reduced in favour of more volunteer opportunities such as the Friendship Inn. This year there will be four club assemblies to update us on what the club is doing in all areas. Also please note we are hosting a joint meeting on November 7th on Syria.

Foundation by Mike Giesbrecht. Dinner will be held on November 30th. The last Polio update from Brenda Banbury had really good Foundation information including a YouTube link that could be shared on your FaceBook page. Please look at it.

Possible Merger of Club Administration was talked to by Jack B. This is proving more elusive and difficult than might be imagined at first. There seems to be resistance in all of the clubs. Jack asked who might be opposed from our club. Jim Weber spoke. He felt the problem wasn’t that administration was a huge burden, but, rather that good systems hadn’t yet been put in place to manage it. This needs to be examined outside of a regular meeting. Joe Dieker from the Nutana Club has come on board to address legal issues which are considerable. Each club has Foundation Trusts etc. that are legal entities with their own by-laws. All of this needs to be properly considered.

Treasurers Report by Wayne Storozuk was not given formally but a one page summary was distributed. The club is solvent. The summary will not be re-produced here but if you missed the meeting you can obtain a copy from Wayne.
