ROTATELLER
MEETING RECAP - 12 August 2019 First meeting of the New Rotary Year

Submitted by Will Arscott

Presidential Address by our new President Vic Dubois

It was a small but enthusiastic meeting at the William Pascoe Room of the Bessborough. We continued our new practice of asking members to chair. For this meeting we were honoured to have Gary Rusu conduct the meeting.

 Greeter was President Vic Dubois
 Cashier was Avis Hardy
Visitors and Guests introduced by Joanne Fisher (who stepped-up at the meeting)
 Membership sang the Rotary Grace
Set-up and take down was done by Al Morton

The meeting opened with O Canada and Rotary grace. This was led from the microphone by Gary Rusu. Gary has a ways to go to match the presence of Wayne McGillivray but he did a fine job none the less. He actually knows the new correct words for O Canada.

Gary began with a reminder that this is the start of a new Rotary year. We have a new RI President in Mark Maloney. The theme for his year is “Rotary Connects the World.”

Visitors and Guests introduced by Joanne Fisher

Our only visitor was Brian Leroy from the Rotary Club of Edmonton South. Your scribe was lucky enough to sit at the table with Brian and I hope our members are as good ambassadors for Rotary as Brian. Brian is an enthusiastic Rotarian and was interested in finding out about our club and sharing about the Rotary Club of Edmonton South. They have many of the same problems we do particularly with a smaller retirement-age club. This has recently improved a little through a contact the Edmonton South Club has made with a young entrepreneur group in Edmonton.

Donna Gauthier was also present at the meeting with grocery cards. Hopefully we can get the cards sales underway again as we move into the fall season.

Announcements made by Past- President Paul

There would have been a regular meeting of the Board of Directors this Wednesday, however President Vic has polled the executive and there would be only four or possibly five members available to meet. There does not seem to be any pressing business. The meeting has been put off to the regular time in September. If you believe there are any issues that need to be addressed immediately please speak to President Vic.

President Vic reminded those that have spoken for tickets to the Radio Media Group event at Marquis Downs that Vic had tickets for them. The event is on Friday August 30th with the gate opening at 6:00 pm and a 6:35 post. The media event is being held down at track level.

Jim Weber announced that there will be an announcement of a meeting for the ‘Education Brings Hope’ committee shortly. All are welcome to come and check out this committee.

Happy and Sad

H  Dave Sundby for much that is happening. He is happy to see the club meeting again, happy to have enjoyed Rotary fellowship working at Ribfest and happy that the new   honey is coming in. He will have honey available for sale in upcoming weeks.

H   Will Arscott for having worked at another very successful Ribfest. The weather was great and over 19,000 people attended. Good to see several of our members taking part.

H  President Vic for Ribfest and for his daughter’s performance at the event. Also happy to see Bev Dubois make a meeting.

H  Jim Weber for having finished up a series of bad events (that come in threes). Jim does not seem to be getting on well with water between his basement getting wet and his car battery getting wet. He is still hoping the electrical system on his car is not a complete write-off. However, Jim sees nothing but unicorns and bunny rabbits ahead.

H Mike Giesbrecht for a family week in Banff. Happy to have the Rotary Four way Test to guide him in dealing with a difficult parking situation. Happy to be driving an American car whose battery cannot be flooded due to a spill from inside the car.

All in all we were a pretty happy bunch this week.

PROGRAM was President Vic on the upcoming Rotary Year

Vic was introduced by Gary Rusu as if he needed any introduction. Vic was born in Winnipeg to a military family and lived in several parts of Canada before getting into the radio business in Vancouver. He now has 50 years of radio experience with 21 years of that in Vancouver before coming to Saskatoon. His radio career has been a success. He has served on many boards including such diverse organizations as the Prairieland Exhibition and Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan.

Before beginning his main presentation Vic presented some pins to members of the club.   These pins should have been presented sooner but for a variety of reasons could not be:

Vic presented a past-president pin to Bev for her presidency during the 2015-2016 year.

Paul Harris pins were presented to Gary Rusu and Paul Gauthier.

[Here your scribe gets lucky. Attached in a separate email is the presentation from President Vic to the club. Said scribe will not edit or comment.]  Vic’s remarks were very well received.
