ROTARY MOMENT
Jim Weber gave us a talk on the Rotary Foundation. He was so impressed with the Foundation, that it was the Foundation which drew him into Rotary. District Grants are available for both international and local projects. Jim told the story of the matching grant program which turned $4,000 raised into $16,000 through matching grants. Our Paul Harris contributions and happy and sad dollars go to the Foundation.

PRESENTER – SHAWN MOEN
Shawn is a partner in the local business known as 9 MILE LEGACY BREWING.
He is a former lawyer and now a businessman.
His close friend and future partner got their start making beer in their respective garages.
The advantage to the consumer of micro-brewing is that we can try new types of beer which the large companies and distributors would not take on. They would not take the chance that a new flavour would have mass appeal.
Micro-brewing rewards creativity and gradual growth, although challenging, is possible. The company began in 2015 and started with a 100-litre brewing capacity which is actually one-tenth of the industry standard for a start up. Now after six years there are two brewing locations and a tap room under the auspices of the company.
The company has high standards and during COVID all the employees were kept on payroll.
9 Mile has created a beer from Durham Wheat although it was thought that this type of wheat, which is quite gummy, was not suitable. Now some farmers who grow Durham can proudly say they are providing wheat that is made into beer. Another recent undertaking is a Pilsner beer using synergy barley.
Shawn advises that some of the beer has a longer shelf life, such as one year, it is best to keep the beer cold. Cheers everyone.

Meeting adjourned.

Next Meeting – September 17. Carmen Hamm will be presenting on the Taste Restaurant Group.

-reported by Steve Wilson.
