ADG Colin Taylor

Colin joined our meeting recently and announced the dates for the District Conference ( June 18-21 in Nipawin have a look at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqbLq9gteCc). Rotary Leadership training is also under way with Bev (anyone else?) having completed several of the modules.

New Members

Just a reminder from Jim, our  Membership chair  of the "new member" proposal process. Once a new prospect is proposed by a sponsor, a wine and cheese reception will be used to promote the meaning of Rotary for the candidates.

The membership committee is looking for volunteers, but all current board members will be on it in any event.

Grocery Cards

Please consider purchasing Grocery Cards from Wayne S. Grocery Cards are an important component of our fundraising for this year. They are available for the Coop, Sobeys and Safeway and can be used for groceries, gas and for the new Coop Liquor store. Put them on your credit card for extra points! There is no additional cost to you beyond the face value of the cards,  but the Club receives a percentage from the merchants.

Treasurer Wayne is looking for volunteers to head up this program.

JUNE 1, 2015 - REMAI MODERN GALLERY

Following an elegant grace by Adriana, Jack introduced our visitors today, Greg Burke CEO of the Remai Modern Gallery and his colleague Associate Director Luke Beuller, head of fund raising.
 
Heather further introduced Greg Burke who spoke to us today on the exciting development of the new gallery, due to open in September, 2016. Greg celebrated having lived in Saskatoon two years ago today.
 
Greg described the importance of the arts to a civic community saying that Art "Enables a city to fall in love with itself".
 
He described the location of the gallery as one of most picturesque in Western Canada, and as being designed by one of the best architects in Canada.
 
The "Remaimodern" (Remaimodern.org) will display world class exhibits including a Picasso gallery, traveling Warhol displays and other International shows. Individual artist showings will also be supported.
 
Included in the facility will be a 150 seat theater, classroom facilities, a 70 person restaurant and bar, a 200 person seating area for dinners and an outdoor terrace with river view. The structure will be a multi-faceted facility including a rental boardroom and meeting rooms for corporate or private events. As well the rooftop patio can be rented  and offers extraordinary views.
 
Admission charges are being contemplated for higher end shows but the main floor may be free to the public. Special access for seniors is also being planned.
 
The aim is that the Gallery will become a major community hub. Ellen Remai has been a key supporter of the Gallery having donated over $50 million, allowing for a special Picasso art purchase of 406 "lino" cuts! Total endowments to date have resulted  in $58 in donations from donors.
 
The Old Mendel Gallery will be closing soon and appropriate recognition of the Mendel family's long support is planned for the event.

Sergeant at Arms

Wayne S. acted as our Sergeant today and took us through a history lesson with fines for lack of knowledge about the 50 year history of the flag, Prime Ministers, Premiers, Mayor's etc. Dollars were raised for:

• Gord's three weeks in France
• Bee stings for Dave's son's new hobby
• Jim's football support for the Rider's new roster
• Graham for an excellent meal and great fellowship at Lobster Fest
• Mark for his son Brendan's grad as a dentist who will join Mark in their practice
• And a sad dollar from Paul for the recent passing of his Mother in Law who had a  proud history as an educator in this Province
