MEETING RECAP - February 11th - 3rd Meeting of 2019

Submitted by Will Arscott

Quiet Club Luncheon Meeting

This meeting was to have a speaker to inform us about Bloom, an organization that supports neonatal care. Unfortunately our speaker was double booked and was unavailable to come speak at the meeting, so a networking/social meeting was organized. It was a small meeting with fewer than usual members who braved the cold to attend. The day was the warmest for a week but a raw wind made it very unpleasant to be out and about.

To compound the problem your scribe was late and missed the first part of the meeting. Luckily there isn’t a Sergeant because your scribe is deserving of a fine.

Announcements

There will be an important meeting of the President’s Council on Tuesday February 19th at the Saskatoon Club. Incoming District Governor Fred Wright and Gail Marie Anderson (District Governor 20-21) will be attending to discuss the District Strategic Plan. The meeting is for presidents and incoming presidents and all that attended the Strategic Planning session on September 15th. If you have an interest you would be welcome to attend. Please let President Paul know.

The five Rotary clubs are undertaking a joint New Citizen Ceremony. The tentative date of May 13th has been set. It will be an evening function at the Travelodge. These ceremonies have been a project of the Nutana club for some time. Generally it is expected that the sponsor will pay for the new Canadian and one guest. This is a cost of $50 per inductee based on a meal at $25.   How many inductees does our club wish to sponsor? Gary Rusu and Peter Zakreski have already spoken up and both are taking on five inductees at $50 per inductee. It was announced on Tuesday at Nutana Rotary that we already had agreed to sponsor a total of nineteen new Canadians. Nutana is still ahead of us in sponsorships so more would be welcome. It appears there will be at least fifty new Canadians inducted at the ceremony. President Paul is finding out when your sponsorship money is required and to whom it is to be paid.
The Rotary Club of Saskatoon North is undertaking a clean-up of Rotary Park on Saturday, May 11th. They would welcome participation from all the clubs. A show of hands indicated there are a lot of our members who would be willing to participate. Our numbers will be passed on to Brenda Banbury so the MVA can select an appropriate clean-up area. A formal sign-up sheet will be available at a future meeting.

The regular Board Meeting will be held on Wednesday February 13th at 7:00 am at the Saskatoon Club. By the time this Rotateller is published the meeting will be over.

Happy and Sad Dollars

Unfortunately the scribe was not present for this part of the meeting so the declarations will forever remain lost in the sands of time. There was some discussion of the words to the national anthem as they were sung at a recent Huskie sporting event. I am not sure how that could relate to a member of our club.

Program

Two members spoke briefly to the club:  Wayne McGillivray and Gary Emde. Again, your scribe was only present for Gary’s talk.

Gary summarized the current real estate situation in Saskatoon which he says is improving after three years of being in the doldrums. Prices are particularly good for mid-range homes within the older boundaries of the cities. Rental units are still being built on spec to build up inventory and this is depressing rental rates outside of the immediate University area. In the future some of these units will come on sale.
