MEETING RECAP - 5th Meeting of 2019, March 11th

Submitted by Will Arscott

Hospice Services in Saskatoon - Bruce Acton St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation

It was a regular speaker format meeting at the Delta Bessborough. President Paul presided. The warm weather brought more of our members out of hibernation.

Greeter was Wendy Cooper
Cashier was Wayne Palmer
Visitors and Guests introduced by Jack Brodsky
Grace given by Avis Hardy
Set-up completed by Al Morton

O Canada was a little tepid without Wayne McGillivray. The club also reverted to singing some of the old lyrics. This was followed by an appropriate grace from Avis Hardy.

Visitors and Guests introduced by Jack Brodsky
Bruce Acton from the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, our guest speaker
Chris Potts, visitor, came to check us out.

Health of the Club

Adrianna Van Duyvenkyk (Avis Hardy) says”hi’ to all the members. She is waiting to receive a pacemaker.

Otto Ulrich (Will Arscott) our one – year- old honorary life member entered RUH last week with what was thought to be a stroke. In the end it was not a new stroke but the result of an earlier stroke and his lack of mobility was due to an infection in his leg. He was treated and is resting at home.

Announcements

Out annual Badge, Shield and Star Dinner is on April 17th. It is an evening event at Prairieland Park. This is our largest fundraiser of the year but will only be successful if tickets are sold. Please buy your tickets. They are now available on- line and there will be a link on our website.

There will be a Red Cross Luncheon “Power of Humanity” held on April 17th. This year’s event will honour the work of our members Elaine and Peter Zakreski. Tickets are $75. It would be great if we could have our members represent Rotary and our members at this event. (You will note that this is the noon of the day of our Badge, Shield and Star Dinner.)

The five Rotary clubs are undertaking a joint New Citizen Ceremony. The date of May 13th has been set. It will be an evening function at the Travelodge. These ceremonies have been a project of the Nutana club for some time. Generally it is expected that a sponsor will pay for the new Canadian and one guest. This is a cost of $50 per inductee based on a meal at $25. How many inductees does our club wish to sponsor?  Gary Rusu and Peter Zakreski have already spoken up and are taking on five inductees each at $50 per inductee. President Paul was able to announce that we have tied the Nutana Club and each of us are sponsoring twenty-one new Canadians at the event. President Paul is finding out when your sponsorship money is required and to whom it is to be paid.

KG Reading Project is not yet off the ground and there are problems with our and the school’s understanding and hopes for the project.  Joanne Fisher reported that the teacher is looking for a weekly program with readers assigned to work on an ongoing basis with particular students. There is a real issue as to how many of our members are able to make this kind of a commitment. It is still being worked on and we leave it in Joanne’s capable hands.

Masters Golf Pool. This project is again being organized by Dave Sundby. This is a nice, simple fundraiser for us if we work at getting people to participate in it. The project is based on the Masters Golf Tournament and the entry forms are out. The form has been emailed to members and further forms will be available at our meetings. Please photocopy as many entries as you need. If you are planning to watch the tournament it is more exciting with some ‘skin’ in the game.

Adventures in Technology (AIT) is taking place from April 29th through May 3rd. The lead club for this year’s event will be the North Club. Jack Brodsky will be coordinating our volunteers. We need billets for the participants. There is information available as to what is required of the billets. Please help Jack out if at all possible. We will also need van drivers and other help. Sign-up sheet was circulated at the meeting and will be available at future meetings.

Next Meeting March 25: This will be a RAP update meeting led by Jack Brodsky and RAP Executive Director, Winston Blake.

Happy and Sad

It was a short session this week with mostly happy dollars.
H:  Avis Hardy for Adrianna’s recovery
H&S: Will Arscott for missing Rotary Fishing Trip particularly now that legal marijuana will be available. Happy to be asked to play in orchestra for Summer Players production of ‘Sweeney Todd.’
H: Gary Emde for his time in Hawaii
H: Clare Heagy for guest speaker topic and for hospice needs starting to be addressed in Saskatoon.
(Somehow in the H&S proceedings Joanne Fisher managed to get an invitation to go on the fishing trip.)

PROGRAM

Bruce Acton Chair of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation (SPHF) was introduced by Gary Rusu. Bruce has already contributed much to the advancement of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation. He come from a background in communications.

Although your scribe took notes during the presentation, Bruce provide his speaker notes which are attached. I would recommend taking some time reading this presentation as this is important news particularly for people of the age of our members. The video Bruce played was particularly powerful and showed how important hospice care would be to one particular family. It is not just the person who is dying, but the entire family that is helped through hospice care.

Bruce was thanked by President Paul and the regular donation for the presentation will be made to the Salvation Army Bethany Home.
