Paul was working with the City while Galen was employed there so he was the obvious choice to introduce him. Galen is the City of Saskatoon Water and Sewer Engineering Manager. He took his training as an engineer at U of S and started in Swift Current, moving to work for the City of Saskatoon 28 years ago. Galen started with a photo of wastewater pipes from 1914. Saskatoon was the first City in Canada to separate wastewater from the storm water system. 90 % of our water comes from Alberta, 6 - 7 % comes between their border and us, starting at Swift Current, and 3 - 4 % comes from Beaver Creek. The North and South Saskatchewan Rivers join east of Prince Albert. The Qu’Appelle system runs through Regina. The Gardiner Dam is a great asset to us as water can be released without all the silt flowing from the regular river system. In 2013 we had the highest water level in recent decades. Even so, at that time Calgary’s flow was 5-6000 cubic meters/sec of flow while ours was between 2000 and 2200. The Gardiner Dam helped during that time. Our catch basin was better than Calgary’s as well. They had considerable flooding, but we only had a part of Spadina under water for a few days. Our river system can support a million people. Galen showed us a projection map of Saskatoon to indicate the structure of our City at that size. We already have in place a water treatment plant on 11th Street, but we are building another one near the current water inlet. Its cost will be between $350 and 400 Million and is expected be completed in 2032. We have four reservoirs in place in Saskatoon right now. Martensville would be part of our City at that point. We are gradually emptying their waste lagoon by taking on some of their flow in our low peak times. Editor’s note: I was not able to capture all of presentation in my notes. The presentation was remarkably interesting, and I would like to hear it again at some later date. - reported by Steve Wilson Next meeting May 31, 2021. Speaker is Rotarian Dale Worall, on District Youth Exchange.
