REGULAR MEETING AT THE BESSBOROUGH ‘Annual General Meeting of the Saskatoon Rotary Club’

O Canada was led by Wayne McGillivray as usual - it is impossible to get tired of true talent.

 

Grace - Al Morton challenged us to put the Rotary Motto of ‘Service Above Self’ to work to make a difference in the world.

 

Visitors and Guests there were NO visitors or guests.

 

 

*****- THIS JUST IN: Our meeting next week (March 7^th) will be our annual RAP meeting. It will be held at Holy Cross High School on Taylor Street. Come to the main entrance for 12pm and you will be directed. Lunch is to be served.

 

- Our annual Badge Shield and Star Dinner will be held on Thursday April 21^st.

 

- President Bev recognized the considerable work Wayne McGillivray and Al Morton do each week setting up and taking down our meetings.

 

 

Clare began by giving a brief history of this corporation that has not been active in the past year. It has been useful in the past to allow us to handle GST without putting ourselves in a position where we have to remit GST on Rotary Dues. It was last used for RAP in its early days and may be useful again. It costs about $20 per year to maintain and Clare believes it should be maintained. All members of the club are members of this corporation.

 

Clare presented a slate of officers with Peter Whitenect as president and Gary Kerr and VP. Motion to accept moved by Vic Dubois seconded by Bill Johnson CARRIED.

 

Clare presented a motion to move the head office to the club address and if that were not permissible to his residence address (it is currently the address of Clare’s old firm). Moved by Bev Dubois, seconded by Bill Johnson CARRIED.

 

 

- Gary K was fined for wearing sergeant’s button when he was merely the greeter.

- fined various tables for not knowing that four of our members had won a trip to Vegas to play poker. Of five on the trip four are our Rotarians – Dave S.; Steve W and two others (OK, fine the scribe for incomplete reporting next meeting).

- Asked table to name our club’s local and international projects. This didn’t raise much money but was a useful exercise. We have more projects in each category than might be expected and some of them come to mind more quickly than others.

 

 

 

- Adriana V and Peter W happy dollars for having completed angiograms.

- Al M happy for two great weeks in Cuba

- Bev D happy for son Patrick’s work with the Saskatoon Rush lacrosse team (announcing) and the recognition he is receiving.

- Wayne M happy for getting his new puppy settled (sort of) and for getting back to the hill and for the great weather.

- Scott B happy for having finished 1^st in the poker (truth). He was happy three other Rotarians were able to accompany the winner on the trip to Vegas.

- Steve Wilson happy and sad for taking part in the homeless walk. He enjoyed participating but is sad it is necessary.

 

 

- Official minutes were taken by Bill Johnson and this writer will make no attempt to provide proper minutes for the meeting.

 

- Called to order last year’s minutes were distributed and approved (one unclear reference was struck from the record).

 

- President Bev spoke of us having a successful club with a stable membership. We have money in the bank.

 

- The treasurers report was distributed. Unfortunately Treasurer Wayne Storozuk was unable to attend. After the removal of dedicated items the club operated on a break-even basis for last year. Bev pointed out that our financials are in order and the board is very pleased with the reporting Wayne is providing. Great work in a busy job, Wayne!

 

- There was a question from Dave Sundby about the 10% administration charge on dedicated funds that flow through our club (example: Hope for Malawi). He asked whether the charge was to continue or be modified. President Bev indicated that this would be a matter for the Board to consider and that the Board would consider in due course.

 

- The standard motion was passed to waive the audit.

 

Director’s Reports

 

- Mike Giesbrecht reported the Foundation had a good year and met and exceeded it's fund-raising goal by a large amount. This makes it possible for our club to continue to get RI grants. Glad to see the number of PH and MPH awards achieved this year. The Foundation dinner was a success.

 

- Heather Clysdale reported on Club Service. She thanked Joanne Fisher for all her work with the King George project. She thanked Scott Byers for his work on the youth exchange. She indicated that all our international projects are headed by great (and competent) people. She finished by thanking the club for all our support of the various club projects.

 

- Vic Dubois reported on public relations. In our club public relations has not done a great deal but does try to get our information out to the media. You never know when it is sent out whether it will get play or not. Sometimes you are lucky in this regard. Vic is doing a presentation at District Conference in Gimli. There will be a meeting of the PR directors of the five Saskatoon Rotary clubs. The first thing they need to do is set a framework of what they would like to achieve. President Bev thanked Vic for the recognition RAP has received in radio media.

 

- Bill Johnson reported on programming. Bill spoke of the balance he is trying to achieve between presenting Rotary programs and providing presentations about activities in the wider community. Bill hopes the members are happy with the balance. Most programs are set until May.

 

Election of Officers

 

- The new Board slate was presented by incoming president Jack Brodsky. The slate was approved. Since the slate was drawn Farooq Naiyer has had to resign as Club Secretary. It will be up to the Board to find a replacement. The new president elect is Mark Gryba. The slate was approved.
