GUEST SPEAKER

Joeline Magill, Executive Director of Hope Restored, was introduced by Avis Hardy.

Joeline served at the Redberry Camp from 2010 - 2015 and she has been the Executive Director of Hope Restored since 2015. Positive and systemic changes are needed and Hope Restored had a Grassroots beginning and the safe house opened in November 2019. There is a need to educate social service providers so they can recognize girls trapped in sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

Joeline spoke about the three main areas of focus: Education, Funding, and Partnerships.

The scope of this non-profit organization is Saskatoon, but it reaches some other areas in Saskatchewan. We need to champion human rights and acknowledge truth and reconciliation. One reality is that about 60% of exploited girls are indigenous.

In 2017 Hope Restored started reaching out to try to find girls in trouble, including visiting massage parlours, going out on the street, and through texting.

The Safe House has the following structure:

Phase I About 4 - 6 weeks. The individual is stabilized, and basic needs are met.

Phase II There is skills training, the women/girls are in healing groups,  one-on-one counseling, and trauma education.

Phase III The focus is on job readiness, which takes about 3 - 4 months.

Sexual exploitation happens all over our city. It is not a 20th Street problem. It is in all our hotels and neighbourhoods.

Statistics of Prostitution:
* 76 % have been raped
* 91 % have been assaulted
* 67 % have been assaulted with a weapon
* 91 % porn has been made from them
* 76 % have a PTSD diagnoses

Runaways are picked up by traffickers within 24-48 hours. Girls as young as 11 years old are recruited. About 93% were born in Canada so it is a myth that it is mostly foreign women/girls who are exploited. The average annual profit per girl is $280,800.

Goals include a strong financial partnership and a strong donor base.

They need a second home (safe house).

There is a website - Hope Restored Canada.

We presented a cheque in the amount of $ 5,400 to Joeline and then the floor was opened for other personal donations, which were as follows:

Mark Gryba          $500
Wendy Cooper      $500
Jack Brodsky        $1,000
Graham Pearson   $1,000
Will Arscott          $250
Jim Weber            $500
Paul Gauthier       $500
Gray Rusu            $500

All donations were made on behalf of the member and their spouse, whose name was also mentioned when the donation amount was given. The total came to an additional $ 4,750. The cheques should be made out to Rotary Club of Saskatoon Charitable Trust Inc. so receipts can be provided.
