.jpg) SEPTEMBER 28, 2015 -THE ROTARY YEAR AHEAD
President Bev mapped out the key goals and plans for our club in coming Rotary year. Key activities and accomplishments to date include:
- The Bessborough Hotel has been secured for year
- The Club Directory will include photos again and is being organized by our Club partnering with two other clubs
- The Board budget has now been completed
- More Fellowship events are being planned this year; for example the "guess whose coming to dinner" format might be tried again
The District Strategic Plan is being integrated into our Club plans and is set to the theme of "Be a gift to the World". The Strategic Plan contains the following key focuses:
- Provide more support for local Clubs
- Increase humanitarian activities around the Globe
- Enhance the public image of Rotary
Bev noted that she is applying for Presidential citations from RI, that include such themes as humanitarian service. Seminars are available to teach Rotarians the fundamentals for these themes. RI is also reemphasizing Rotaract and the Rotary Exchange program for the coming year.
Bev also provided an update on Polio Plus. 2018 is the target date for complete eradication of polio around the world. Bev closed her presentation by having us recite the Four Way Test.
Following Bev's comments, we enjoyed classical guitar entertainment from B. J. Goldman, a visiting musician from Nashville who is performing at a local Blue Grass concert. Wayne commandeered the young man from the hotel lobby to perform for us!
Sergeant at Arms
Dave S. acted as our Sergeant at Arms and raised fines and dollars for the following:
- Graham and Darcelle's photo from the Mayor's Cultural dinner
- Tim's pending retirement and his shameless shilling to sell more cars
- Will A. dissing Mark G.
- Steve W.hosting exchanger Sammy
- Heather walking the river trail
- Wayne for the musical interlude
- Mark for his favorite teams' wins
- Peter Z. for BC wine tasting
- Mike G. for a river bike ride with Scott B.
- Graham for seeing McDavid play for the Oilers
- Bev for attending the symphony and running two 10 k runs
- Al M. attending an Association dinner and seeing old friends and colleagues
- Steve W. for attending the fun Rotary exchange student party on the weekend
- Dave S. for attending a Medieval Fair and selling honey
- Jim for Wayne's volunteering to coordinate laptop donations for Mexico
Announcements
Following a thoughtful Grace from Mike G., Peter Z. introduced our visitors and guests:
- Ed Peck from the Nutana Club
- Our exchange student Sammy
- Our musical entertainer B.J. Goldman from Nashville
Following introduction of our guests today, President Bev presided and listed several announcements. Also reminders of recent announcements are listed as well:
- Jack promoted the Meewasin Fall Dinner being held October 8, with the net proceeds going to RAP.
- Jim announced the upcoming Becas dinner to be held Thursday, October 29. A Mexican theme will be used with a street fair format and burritos as the main course. Tammy and Sarah Helgert are in charge of planning the dinner. Ticket prices are being decide upon . Silent auction items are needed.
- Mike G. spoke to the Foundation Dinner to be tentatively held on November 16. More details are to follow. He also announced a Foundation Committee meeting on Friday, October 2, 7:30 AM at the Saskatoon Club.
- Host families are urgently needed after Christmas for exchange student Sammy. Please consider your availability and see Steve W. for details. Please also consider taking Sammy out for family excursions.
- The Laptop donation program is back in action for the Puerto Vallarta school children. If you can donate an old laptop please see Wayne M. for details.
- Wayne S. stressed the need to sell more grocery cards and also the need for careful reconciliation at the front desk. Please consider buying cards as unique gift ideas.
Rotateller
Graham is looking for continued backup to write the weekly newsletter. A simple Word document highlighting the meeting will work fine for those not wanting to use Club Runner. The task is important and a good way for new members to get their "feet wet" in supporting the club. Lots of help is available and the time commitment is limited. Please let Graham, Gord, Al or Adriana know if you can help.
