ROTARY MOMENT

Mark Gryba took the opportunity to speak about our Raffle Fundraiser. There are unique features about the raffle. You can choose your prize if you have a winning ticket. When you go to the site you can purchase tickets and make a separate donation. There is also a link to information about rotary projects.

Presenter - HERB PINDER JR.

Introduction by Gary Rusu:

Herb has 10 years in the family pharmacy business. Following this he has 35 years as a sport’s agent, particularly hockey. He has been on approximately 50 boards over the years, including crown corporations and the Sports Hall of Fame.

Herb’s topic could be described as the issue of Global Warming. Herb had spoken to our club on this topic several years ago.

His observations are that the government and the media spread information that is not based on fact and that they use this same information to meet their own agenda.

We are told that the temperature of the oceans is going up and that glaciers are melting. This may be true, but Herb says this is a part of a natural cycle that keeps being repeated over thousands of years. The temperature will drop again, and the polar icecaps will freeze again. If a cross section is made of a tree which is 1000 years old or more, there will be rings in that cross-section which will show there are years when there is plenty of water and years when there is little water. Again, there is fluctuation in the rainfall. The argument is that we humans are doing things to cause pollution which changes our environment. Herb says these fluctuations will happen despite what we do.

Another natural cycle is the burning and re-growth of our forests. The number of fires is down over the years. The last time there was a major burn in Prince Albert National Park was 1911.

CO2 is given a bad reputation, but it is an essential element of our existence. It keeps our atmosphere warm. Our vegetation requires it.

Renewable energy is largely inefficient. It takes so much energy and cost to build a windmill, with its tons of concrete for the base and precious metals to run it, and then it eventually breaks down.

Energy based on hydro is a good source and our country gets about 82% of its energy from that source.

Herb recommends a book by Steve Coonan called, ‘Unsettled’ which is about the topic Herb presented to us today.

Next Meeting - October 17 a week after Thanksgiving. Presenter is Barb Stefanshyn-Cote from Black Fox Farm and Distillery.
