ROTARY CLUB OF SASKATOON MEETING
Held at The Saskatoon Club April 7, 2025, with a Zoom alternative.
Will Arscott chaired the meeting.
Members sang O Canada and Avis Hardy recited grace.
Paul Gauthier handled technology. Cashier was Donna Gauthier. Greeter was Don Lepp.
Don introduced our guest speaker Leane Durand who was more formally introduced before her presentation.
There were no other visitors and guests.
HAPPY AND SAD DOLLARS
- $200 President Jack was happy to announce that would be two new members inducted at the next meeting.
- $ 100 Gary Rusu was happy that he had 8 volunteers the previous Monday at the Friendship Inn, where there had been a shortage of staff.
- $ 10S from Avis. Al Morton had a fall and fractured his hip. Jack reported that Al is in City Hospital, is in quite good spirits and the prognosis is good.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
District Conference is May 9 and 10 and will be virtual.
Rock for RAP, a major fundraiser, will be on May 2. Tickets for tables and individuals are being sold.
Wednesday, April 15th there will be a local community services meeting.
The date is set for the craft fair - November 1. When announced interest was immediate, 31 tables have been sold already.
Presentation
Kent Smith-Windsor introduced speaker Leane Durand.
Leane Durand was an entrepreneur in Battleford. Her skills are fund-raising and leadership. Over the past few years as CEO of RAP she has solidified the management team.
Leane asked, “What is it we do at RAP”? The focus in on the conflict many teenagers face. They are hormonal and their brains are not yet fully developed. Therefore, conflict and the resolution of conflict is not the same for a young person.
They need to feel safe and validated. We need to find the source of an issue. What is seen on the surface is not enough.
Along with counselling and resolving an incident, RAP teaches truth and reconciliation and brings other leadership initiatives. We are the only ones who can do this and are permitted to work within the high schools. We build trust and relationships.
Statistics show the following:
- 1/5 of all students interact in some way with RAP.
- 14.4% increase in those seeking RAP.
- 25% increase in one-on-one meeting with facilitator.
- 2547 interactions 2023 and 2024.
- 454 Mediations, a 16% increase.
- 665 follow-ups, a 20% increase.
A motto of RAP is ‘keep the little things little (prevent escalation.)'
There are still 4 high schools in the City without RAP and they all want it: Bishop Mahoney, Aden Bowman, Evan Hardy, Marion Graham.
The greatest problem RAP is faced with is that 95% of all incidents have an online element.
